Puerto Vallarta

Our trip to Puerto Vallarta was a bonus 4 or 5 nights that was offered by our time share purchase.  The time share where we stayed was located South of the harbor where the cruise boats dock. We were able to catch public transportation along Paseo Diaz Ordaz to Old Town, where we spent most of our time.  Our first priority was to find a “real” Mexican restaurant.  I think we looked into one of the guide books–no Yelp available, and decided to walk a bit more South across the river and Isla Cuale that emptied into the harbor.  Don’t remember the name of that restaurant, but it served by far the best Mexican food that I had ever eaten.

We spent a lot of time walking around the Malecon region and riding back to our time share.  We even thought that we had the bus system down pat until we ended up in a very poor local area of the town, and had to stay on the bus until it eventually took us back to the stop where we got on.  We did find the house that Richard Burton bought for Elizabeth Taylor and we took another local bus trip to the sight of The Night of the Iguana.  The site is not what I would have expected, but it was scenic.

One disappointment that I had was that we could not find a place to snorkel near the place that we stayed.  We would have had to take a charter or venture away from the town via car–which we didn’t rent.

I mentioned the best Mexican food previously, well, a day or two later we took another bus and walked a bit further to an even better restaurant.  Again, I forgot the name, but I do know that it was a mile or so away from Old Town, and there was a creek across the street from the restaurant.

We enjoyed the Sand Art and the many sculptures to be seen in Old Town.  There was also an evening cruise that we observed–on a pirate ship.  Evidently there is a five hour cruise just after sunset.

Attention tequila drinkers!   There is a tequila tour that you could likely take if you didn’t want to just wander into one of many shops around the area.
